AlphaShield Pro hardware firewall, $120
A follow-up to the highly successful, original AlphaShield (which will continue to be sold), this version of the hardware firewall seals your computer off from outside invaders and helps protect against viruses by blocking all 65,536 ports for both TCP-IP and UDP communications. But the Pro (www.alphashield.com) has a dynamic configuration mode that means that gamers and those who want to allow hosting can use a small Windows-only configuration utility to open a specific port or a range of ports. As well, you can adjust settings to allow for virtual private networks, etc. It doesn't conflict with existing firewalls or routers.
Shinza Screen Cleaning Pet, mini mobile version, $6.95 US
Because you are a kind person who loves animals, you wouldn't want to go cleaning the LCD screen on your PDA, your mobile phone or your digital camera with the belly of your own Labrador retriever. That's why Shinza (www.shinza.com) sells these little items (in Doberman or Labrador models) that have a cleaning cloth built into their belly area. They come with a chain so that you can attach the cute little fellows to, say, the strap of your camera, where they will always be handy for instant use. Larger versions, including an American shorthair cat, are available for your computer screen at $9.95 US.
Zucchetti Ambrogio Evolution robot lawn mower, $2,900
Like the home helicopter, one of the most long-promised devices of the future has always been the robot lawn mower. Now, for just under $3,000 (www.robotshop.ca) you can have this set-and-forget version, that, once you stake out the area that you want mowed with a perimeter wire, you, according to the company, "just sit back and watch because the mower recharges itself and keeps on working until its job is done." The robot, which programs itself or allows you to change the setting, can be used on surface up to 3,000 square metres and can handle slopes of up to 27 degrees. If you have big pockets you can buy two mowers and use them in the same space.
